This panel discussion on “Synthetic Diamonds: Challenges and Opportunities” was informative and well moderated by Ms. Bhatt. Such seminars are needed to create awareness amongst jewellers and deliver transparency to our customer. The initiative taken by GIA India is greatly appreciated. I hope they continue to educate the trade in the future.
"GIA has been the best talent pool for us and we have always been supported with great young talented designers from them. Their quality and consistency has been amazing and we value their creativity".
It’s been a 1908 company. I’m the fourth generation as of today. I was a kid, when I started and entered the diamond industry, my father sent me to mines, to factories, which used to manufacture diamonds. My fifth generation, which is coming in should be well cushioned as of today. I want them to be learning right from the site holders from the place and then the final finished touch by the GIA brand as a gemologist. Remembering my generation, all what we went through, we used to send stones to America, to get them certified by GIA, wait from them to come back and please our customers with it. Today I feel very proud of my country that GIA has welcomed them, GIA being the great foundation for our industry because as of today the world’s 75% diamonds are cut, grind or from India. I took my son to GIA Institute and we were welcomed so whole-heartedly. And of course the whole team, Apoorva, Ms Bhatt and the educational head, he was very kind enough to guide me the right way and give me the appropriate time and explain me step by step-step, in which level the child can be so I thought that they are better parents than me, if they have to enter the diamond industry. So here I am and for me I would be a proud father, I and my child having the label of a GIA gemologist.
My association with GIA goes to 1972 when, as a student of Business Administration in USA, I decided to do my GIA courses as well. To the diamond industry, GIA phenomenon is a wonderful thing which happened. Jewellery industry in North India has always been very keen participants in GIA programs. The seminars, which GIA did, were excellent. The 4Cs given by GIA have come a long way. It's a full circle and I wish all the best to GIA. Ever since GIA has come to Mumbai, it has been doing an excellent job in teaching the basics of jewellery, gemstones, which is the most required thing for the modern jeweller. Grading of diamonds is important which GIA did but educating retailers, sales persons and public in general is more important. Unless the public knows about gems and jewellery they cannot demand something better, something which is of high standards and that’s what GIA stands for.
As GIA alumni, we feel well educated. I would always like to get more people educated in the same way. So, alumni can be a very good tool whereby they can pass on their learnings to the newcomers. My first advice to them is to get a short-term course from GIA, measure their field of interest, then go for the long-term courses and join the businesses. We need to keep abreast with the ongoing changes, technical and advancements, in the field of gemmology and I think, there is nobody better than GIA.
I believe that GIA has invested heavily over the last several decades in developing curriculums that are well suited for sales people. What we need in this country is the thousands of sales people across the country need to be exposed to this learning. We believe that there is enough competence amongst the people at GIA in India, who can reach out to people in their local languages translating accurately the curriculum of GIA.
