In 2008, as India emerged as a major supplier of diamonds for global markets, GIA decided to extend its independent gemstone evaluation in India that met global quality standards. Since then, GIA India has grown from strength to strength, and helped the Indian gem and jewellery industry reach newer markets and grow their businesses.
Today, GIA India stands at the centre of the global industry and works with trade bodies at national, regional and local levels across India to identify their needs and challenges. GIA India participates in several industry events and tradeshows across the country – including in Tier-II and Tier-III towns – to reach out to small and medium-size businesses. GIA India also conducts complimentary trade education seminars, retail sales associate training programmes and consumer education seminars on various topics to share knowledge about the important aspects of the industry and help build consumer confidence in the gem and jewellery industry.
Gemmological research is the foundation of GIA’s mission. GIA research efforts serve to protect all who buy or sell gems by ensuring accurate and unbiased global standards for determining gem quality. It also helps establish the grading and identification methods and best practices GIA uses in its laboratories. Furthermore, GIA research efforts help in developing practical instruments and tools to improve detection at point of sale. In addition, GIA’s research informs the curricula of GIA’s professional training courses and programmes.
